Rugby World Cup 2011

The Rugby World Cup is the world’s third largest sporting event (behind the Football World Cup and the Olympics). The tournament in New Zealand, commencing in September 2011, will bring an estimated 85,000 visitor’s and provide a significant boost to our economy.

As Minister for the Rugby World Cup, my role is to take responsibility for the Crowns interest in the joint venture with the Rugby Union and Rugby New Zealand 2011 that runs the tournament. I also oversee relationships with other stakeholders, including the International Rugby Board and am responsible for ensuring there is good coordination amongst government agencies.

A major showcase of New Zealand’s key economic sectors and a festival of New Zealand arts and culture have been arranged. The hosting of the 40th Pacific Forum Leaders meeting in Auckland in the days leading up to the tournament will add an exciting dimension to this part of 2011.
